When you have a health care problem, who do you turn to? I sometimes ask my wife and occasionally my friends, but mostly I rely on my doctor. Not so for most Americans.
Only 4 in 10 adults say their doctor is their primary health care role model, that is the person whose advice they most respect and try to follow.
- 14% say parents (especially young adults ages 18-29);
- 5% say friends (again especially in the younger generations); and
- 5% say TV health shows.
Interestingly, more than 1 in 4 adults say they have no role model…. No one in particular they turn to for health care guidance. Seems like there are a lot of armchair doctors out there but is that really good for our collective health?
