If you needed any more proof that we are a Lethargic Nation, let the following be your guide: Americans exercise at about the same rate as they watch other people exercise from their couch.
Maybe we think our sports heroes’ activity will inspire our own activity – or their activity will somehow ooze magically from our TV screen causing a massive calorie-burning from our Dorito eating and beer guzzling?
And, who would you guess has the worst ratio, averaging much more sports-on-TV vs. exercise? I bet it’s not exactly who you think. Note that:
- More obsessed fans do in fact watch more sports on TV, but they also are much more likely to exercise.
- And men are also much more likely to do both.
But (drum roll from college band please), the biggest couch potatoes who choose sports-watching over exercising by a ratio of almost 2:1 are: men ages 30-39. And, younger men ages 18-29 are nearly the reverse.
What’s your gap between hours logged exercising vs hours logged sports-watching?
