It’s hard to believe that our two major parties and two of our three arms of government can’t get along because we Americans actually seem to agree on most things, at least as far as the future of scientific discovery, education and research are concerned.
The majority of Americans agree that:
- Stem cell research should be pursued to find cures for diseases (86%).
- Scientists should not practice the cloning of animals and humans (72%).
- Schools should not teach evolution only (67%).
- Drilling should not be allowed in our national parks and wildlife refuges (66%).
- Global warming is a serious threat to our environment (65%).
- Scientists should not prioritize building robots and machines that think for themselves (61%).
Notably, party lines seem to blur here… The right’s platform “wins” on evolution and cloning, while the left can claim stem cell research, resource protection and global warming. It appears no one group speaks for America. So what’s a politician on a national stage to do? Represent Americans, right? Except for, you know, when the local voices are louder, or the donors are squeakier, or the politician’s own belief system is firmer.

January 6, 2017 at 3:14 pmHi Edwin,
Just saw your question from January 1st. All the data in our VeraSpectives blog post comes from our VeraQuest omnibus surveys conducted online. We field weekly surveys among 1500 nationally representative respondent. The surveys are typically characterized by 2 to 3 clients each asking several proprietary questions. When there is ample room on the survey vehicle, we add our own questions that we think might be interesting to our followers. If you’d like to learn more about VeraQuest, you can go to our home page.
